Does the past matter? Is there one History or many? The first people who wrote something down, how had they learned to read so as to know what they were writing? When a nation grows up, does it rebel and necessarily become a state? Do societies have dirty laundry? What does your family think about the Civil War? When dominoes are set up correctly, are they set up correctly only in order to fall? Can you be defined by something you do not know? Can a performance be made only of questions? The Hatari group presents Haiti, a performance for history and, through it, 255 questions about the History of the modern Greek state, its course through the centuries, the relationship between our times and the past, and our place in the endless river of time. With the question as its main and only tool, modern Greek history becomes a field of reflection, research and play, as well as a counterpoint to an ahistorical and flat present. The history of a State that began its journey with warm wishes for liberation from Haiti, the first country to officially recognise the Greek Revolution of 1821. “Haition”, an independent but very poor country which, as it was unable to support the revolution financially, sent the Greeks 45 tonnes of coffee to be sold so that muskets and other munitions could be bought, as well as 100 Haitian volunteers, who all died during the voyage to Greece…
